Meet the Masters

Over 40 works of art from the Tubac Center of the Arts Master Artist collection was on display at the historic copper-domed building, built in 1979. Master Artists featured included Francis Beauguereau, Hugh Cabot, Hart Haller (Hal) Empie, Tom Hill, Dale Nichols, Ross Stefan, Mortimer Wilson, Nicholas Wilson, Bobb Vann, Trudi Fletcher, Barbra Gurwitz, Virginia Hall, Barbara Hill, and Walter Wilson.
These are artists who lived and worked in Tubac and helped to make Tubac known as an art colony where “Art and History Meet”. Arizona elected officials had an opportunity to enjoy seeing this exhibit as they pass by it on their way to legislative sessions at the state capitol. Many other visitors, school and community groups tour the museum regularly. TCA members or friends planning to be in Phoenix this spring had an opportunity to see this exhibit as well as explore this historic area. Tubac Center of the Arts partnered with MOAZA, Museum Artists of Arizona, to bring this exhibition to Phoenix. The exhibit opened to the public on February 9th, with a special reception on February 14th, AZ Statehood Day.

MASTER ARTISTs in this Exhibition
Nick Wilson – perhaps Arizona’s best artist of animals – painting, sculpture, woodblock prints etc. His wife is from a prominent family in upstate NY. Self-taught. Works a lot on sculpture commissions now. But also still paints and does woodblocks.
Virginia Hall – In her 90’s Hall’s undercover valor as one of the first female spies for the British SOE and later the OSS during WWII, Virginia Hall operated behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied France from a prosthetic leg nicknamed “Cuthbert.” From a resilience against odds angle, she coordinated sabotage, gathered intelligence, and…Virginia Hall, The One Legged Spy Who Terrified The Nazis. Many books about her as a spy.
Barbara Gurwitz – in her 80’s. After leaving home at 18, I became a city dweller, painting my way through Boston, New York, California, and Madrid, Spain, Ithaca, Greece, and Provence, France, allowing those places to. . . In Wilde Meyer Gallery. An interesting life living around the US and Europe.
Bob Vann – African American who has painted the Buffalo Soldiers. See article about Bob
