Arizona artists from diverse cultures exhibit works about water and the cultural values surrounding it in this debut of MOAZA’s first traveling exhibition.
We owe our gratitude for the initial concept for this exhibition to the artist Mitra Kamali and to Dr. Melanie Ohm, former director of the Cultural Arts Coalition.
My Water, My Culture is inspired by the essence of life. Water is a necessity. It binds all ethnicities, ecosystems, and the ethos of our planet’s existence. Water is Life. This exhibition features a diverse group of artists representing different cultures and disciplines. Each piece shares what My Water, My Culture, means to them. This work showcases Arizona artists, many with worldwide origins.
This exhibition is meant to not only show appreciation for the earth’s water, and its vital importance to Arizona and the greater world we live in. It reflects the resilience of our planet and inspires hope and optimism. It is about understanding our need to cherish, conserve, and protect our water.
As a curator, I am inspired by a variety of art and artists. This exhibition is made up of people who are environmentalists, poets, and visionaries. My Water, My Culture shows us what water means to them.
Aaron Eagles, Guest Curator
This project provides an opportunity for communities across Arizona to explore their relationship with water. How a person thinks about and uses water is informed by the place and culture of one’s origin. Through a traveling exhibition and workshops in towns and cities across Arizona, participants of all ages will see from an artist’s perspective, learn from scientists, explore their own stories, and create to express their ideas about water.
